Boston, Massachusetts
Met Back Bay was a spur of the moment decision during our stroll down Newbury Street. Our last Boston cuisine consisted of olive hummus and pita bread, grilled artichokes, clam chowder and macaroni and cheese.
Mike's Pastry is a piece of heaven. No matter what time of day (we strolled passed in the evening and late afternoon), this place is packed! Rachel enjoyed an Apple Strudel pastry, while Lucy munched on limoncello cannoli.
During Rachel's visit to Harvard, she ate "The Tom Brady" turkey burger at Mr. Bartley's Burger Cottage on Harvard Square. Best turkey burger ever!
In the North End (filled with Italian food), Lucy ate the Braised Lamb Shank, while Rachel enjoyed the gnocchetti sorrentina.
After our Boston Tea Party museum tour, we walked upstairs to Abigail's Tea Room. Hot tea is a staple in Rachel's family so she was in Heaven! Lucy is a huge fan as well! Lucy drank the Siglio (Asian blend) and Rachel drank Abigail's Breakfast Blend.
Mr. Dooley's Irish Pub was definitely a favorite. We're such a fan of Irish accents and most of the waiters were from Ireland! We both had a cup of clam chowder. Lucy ate the fish and chips and Rachel enjoyed the corn beef sandwich.
Unable to eat before the game, Lucy ate a hot dog (Fenway Frank) and Rachel had pizza. Not bad for a ballpark! Fenway does it right.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Our first Philly Cheesesteak experience was hilarious. There are rules to ordering a Philly Cheesesteak: 1) Know what you want right away. 2) Know how to order it. 3) Know Philly lingo: "wit" = "with".
(City Tavern)
If ever in Philly, City Tavern is a must. Rachel ordered the Chicken a la Franklin and Lucy ate the Turkey Pot Pie. Everything from the bread to the entree is a historical meal or a Founder's recipe. Wonderful!
Gettysburg, Pennsylvania
Kilwins ice cream was incredible. Salted Caramel, "Gettysburg Mud" and Coconut were some of the flavors we tried.
(O'Rorke's)
Another day touring the battlefield called for some more red meat at dinner. The new york strip with asparagus fed us southern gals. Noticing a trend? Definitely not vegetarians.
Antietam, Maryland
(Bender's Public House & Eatery)
After missing lunch (again), Lucy and I ate what all the Antietam locals eat: Burgers. We were famished after spending all day at the battlefield, so red meat hit the spot.
Charlottesville, Virginia
Thanks to UVA Law Student Chelsea Belote's suggestion, we enjoyed dinner at The Whiskey Jar. Lucy ate a grilled pork chop with asparagus and Rachel chowed down the herb roasted catfish with brussel sprouts and grilled onions.
(University of Virginia)
We ate delectable sandwiches off University Avenue at Little John's for lunch. We both ordered the same thing this time: the Wild Turkey (turkey, swiss, peppers, special sauce) with avocado.
Williamsburg, Virginia
The Cheese Shop was delicious! Lucy ate a Virginia ham sandwich and Rachel munched on a roasted chicken & swiss sandwich with gazpacho! We split a plate of brie, goat cheese and sharp cheddar, while Lucy enjoyed a glass of Pinot Grigio.
Charleston, North Carolina
The Glass Onion has been our favorite by far! Lucy ate fried quail, roasted corn on the the cob and watermelon. Rachel enjoyed the trout, succotash and potato salad. We split blueberry/peach cobbler! Thanks, Byron Capt, for the suggestion!
Savannah, Georgia
Savannah wasn't the healthiest day...after Boar's Head, we enjoyed dessert at Savannah's Candy Kitchen - known for their pralines and gophers (praline cookies with chocolate in the middle). Yum!
Before our ghost tour of Savannah, we scarfed down burgers at Boar's Head on Riverstreet.
Birmingham, Alabama
Jackson, Mississippi
Gloria and Jack took us to Hal & Mal's (Jack was craving tamales), and we ate tamales and po-boys. I know, quite the combination.
Natchez, Mississippi:
The Castle Pub is another gem of Natchez. For lunch, Lucy ate a Cajun Catfish Rueben sandwich on rye and Rachel enjoyed a pesto grilled chicken sandwich. We both ate sweet potato fries!
Pleasant Hill, our luxurious B&B (thanks to Jack and Gloria) fed us an incredible breakfast: watermelon, cheese grits and caramel french toast (we stole the recipe).
Magnolia Grill is a hidden treasure "under the hill". It's right off the coast of the Mississippi River. Altogether, we enjoyed fried green tomatoes, fried mushrooms, shrimp and grits and grilled red fish.
